Stuffed Sausage Bread

February 25, 2019

Everyone loves bread and everyone loves sausage so what can be better then this sausage stuffed bread? It's a great way to ramp up your appetizer game for a party or serve up a delectable late night snack, which is what we did this past weekend as I travelled to Alexandria, Virginia with the cast of Burlesque-A-Pades. It's become a post-show tradition.  We retire to our Air B N B, gather around the kitchen and whip up some quick late night eats.  This decadent bread hits the mark!  Caramelized onions dance with sweet sausage and mozzarella cheese in-between slices of fresh Italian bread, delivering a savory and satisfying treat!  The best part about this, it's easy and looks mighty impressive, especially to a bunch of hungry showgirls at 2AM.

One thing you want to keep an  eye out for is the bread you use. You want a fresh loaf of Italian. I know here in the states our options might be limited but be on the look out for a more traditional loaf, something that is less a stick bread and has a bit more width, almost oval.  I have not made this with stick bread, but being in Brooklyn, I've got some great bread options and I love using the more traditional Italian oval.  It gives all that sausage and cheese room to grow.

Want to see how it's done? You can join me on my IGTV channel and watch the cast make this live!

What Do I Need

Loaf of Italian Bread

8 T of butter (cut into 1" pieces)

1 T of butter

1 Md yellow onion chopped

1 Cup of shredded mozzarella cheese

16 Ounces sweet ground sausage

1 T Chopped parsley

Optional Red Pepper Flakes, if you like a little heat, add 1 Tablespoon

Now What

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees

Serves 8 - 12

In a medium saute pan add 1 T of olive oil and gently melt your butter over medium heat.  Next, add your onions and stir for about 5 minutes, now add your sausage,  be sure to break up clumps and cook for about 7 - 10 minutes.  Remove your pan from the heat and stir in your parsley, if you are using red pepper flakes, stir those in now too.

Slice your bread diagonally in 1" slices BUT DO NOT CUT THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE BREAD! Make sure to leave the bottom crust in-tact, otherwise your sausage mixture will just fall out.  Place your bread on a baking sheet, gently add a bit of mozzarella in between each slice, push them down a bit.  Next, add a large serving spoon full of your sausage and onion mixture between each side. Next, add another handful of mozzarella in-between each slice, drizzle any remaining sausage and cheese over the top of the loaf.

Place your bread in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes, allow to cook a bit and serve!
